REM, Core, and Deep are wearable labels — not three equal “types” of sleep invented by Apple Watch. Deep ≈ clinical N3. REM ≈ REM. Core is mostly light sleep (N1 + N2) bundled together because consumer sensors cannot score spindles like a lab.

Why “Core Sleep” Confuses People
Core sounds like a special restorative stage. It is not. It is the middle bucket for light sleep that still matters (spindles help learning) but is not deep or REM. Seeing 4 hours of Core is normal on an 8-hour night. Panic over “too much Core” usually means misunderstanding the label.
How Accurate Are Wearable Stages?
Compared with polysomnography, wearables are decent at sleep vs wake and weaker at stage boundaries — often ~70% agreement for stages. Use rings and watches for week-to-week trends (alcohol nights, late workouts), not medical diagnosis. Clinical stage guide: sleep stages REM and deep.
How to Read a Typical Night Graph
- Deep blocks early after sleep onset → good architecture signal
- REM blocks longer toward morning → expected
- Long Core stretches → normal light sleep, not failure
- Many Awake spikes → check apnea, bathroom trips, or alcohol
